Total Solar Eclipse 2012 ![]() One of the world’s greatest phenomena, a total solar eclipse will take place on November 14th 2012. It will be visible from northern Australia and the South Pacific.
The partial eclipse will begin in the early hours of the 14th November 2012, visible from close to Darwin in Australia’s Northern Territory. It will then cross Cairns and Port Douglas in Queensland, with the total eclipse occurring at 6:38am. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon and sun’s orbits align and then moon overlaps the sun, plunging part of the earth into darkness. A total solar eclipse is a rare occurrence, even rarer when visible from land. Tourism Tropical North Queensland is celebrating the occasion with a Solar Eclipse Marathon, beginning on Four Mile Beach in Port Douglas as soon as the corona (the halo effect during total eclipse) is broken by the sun re-emerging from behind the moon. Charley Boorman’s Extreme Frontiers ![]() Charley Boorman is set to embark on his wildest adventure yet as he seeks to travel across Canada on a motorbike. He’s previously ridden the length of Africa in the award winning series ‘Long Way Down’ and completed the 20,000 mile journey ‘Long Way Round’ eastwards from London to New York with Ewan McGregor.
The new series will track Charley’s marathon 10,300 mile journey across Canada during which he will travel across each of the Canadian provinces and take in 3 oceans, offering a unique insight into this beautiful country. Each part of the trip will uncover the incredible wilderness of Canada, its wonderful people and diverse culture.
On his previous expeditions Charley has crossed many countries as he travels from one point to another but this time he will have the opportunity to focus on and explore just one, the world’s second largest country.
Accompanied by series producer and director Russ Malkin, Charley will experience many of the great activities Canada has to offer, including hunting for icebergs off the coast of Newfoundland, riding the tidal bore in Nova Scotia, canoeing on the Bloodvein River, learning how to rodeo in Maple Creek, heli-mountain biking in British Columbia and trekking on the world’s third largest glacier in the Yukon. He will also attempt to climb 8,000m to the peak of Mount Fable in Alberta and overcome his claustrophobia when wreck diving in Lake Huron, Ontario.
Charley Boorman’s Extreme Frontiers is set to air on Channel 5 during the week commencing 28th November . The journey begins in Newfoundland and culminates in a huge biker convoy across Vancouver Island to Tofino on the Pacific Ocean.
