Getting Around In Australia : Car Rental
  Australia is perfect for exploring by car. As you leave the cities behind and take to the open road you will find little traffic and mile upon mile of wide open spaces and ever-changing landscapes. Stop wherever and whenever you choose and make up your own schedule as you go. Tailor Made Travel has negotiated excellent rates with Avis Car Rental who offer a comprehensive range of vehicles to suit every taste and pocket and a large network of over 130 branches across the country.
Driving in Australia
Australia has a good network of well maintained roads and highways or, for the more intrepid, there are dusty tracks to the Outback which are accessible only by 4WD.
You should always be wary of your fuel. Distances between fuel supplies in more rural areas can sometimes be extreme and trading hours can vary. Fuel is sold by the litre and all Avis vehicles run on unleaded petrol while some of the 4WD vehicles are diesel.
Strict speed limits and drink driving laws apply and random breath testing may be carried out. It is also compulsory across the whole of Australia for seats belts to be worn.
Driver Requirements
The minimum age for a driver of compact or intermediate vehicles is 21 years. For all other vehicles the minimum age is 25 years.
For drivers between the age of 21 and 24 years inclusive, a daily fee is payable locally at the time of rental. All drivers must carry a valid full current drivers licence (photo card and paper licence). There is no maximum age restriction and no charge for additional drivers.
Minimum Hire and One Way Rentals
The rental period is calculated on a 24-hour system and the minimum rental period is 2 days.
One way rentals are permitted between certain locations, where the hire is for 3 or more consecutive days, generally without incurring a one way fee. One way rentals between certain states do apply.
Insurance
Tailor Made Travel clients are covered by fully comprehensive insurance (subject to an excess). You are able to reduce the excess with a daily fee payable locally at the commencement of your hire.
Complimentary Hotel Delivery
Avis may deliver cars to hotels within a 10km distance of an Avis location between the hours of 9.30am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday. (Conditions may apply).
Bond/Deposit
All rentals are subject to a deposit at the time of vehicle collection to cover miscellaneous/ optional charges, the applicable insurance excess and a A$100 fuel bond. The bond can be paid by any major credit card or cash.
Driving Restrictions
Avis vehicles must only be driven on roads that are properly formed with either tarmac or gravel. It is prohibited to drive any vehicle on beaches or through streams, dams, rivers or floodwaters.
Vehicles rented from mainland Australia may not leave the mainland and be taken to Tasmania or any other island (including Kangaroo Island). However, rentals are available within Tasmania.
Those planning to travel to remote locations should advise us at the time of booking as other regional restrictions apply.
