Taking the train is a great way to travel throughout this vast country, allowing you to relax, take in the scenery as it unfolds outside your window and avoid the crowds. Australia boasts a vast rail network with a variety of travel classes from coach class seats to private sleepers.

The Ghan
Follow in the footsteps of the early Afghan pioneers and travel the route they paved, deep into the heart of Australia. The legend that is The Ghan travels twice weekly from Adelaide through the Flinders Ranges and across the Simpson Desert to Alice Springs, heart of the Outback. From here the train threads its way through the harsh centre of Australia to Katherine and the lush tropical surroundings of the Top End.

The Indian Pacific
Crossing three states, one of the world’s largest deserts and traversing the longest stretch of straight railway on the planet – 299 miles without a bend in sight, The Indian Pacific, as the name implies links two oceans in one phenomenal journey. Departing twice weekly the Indian Pacific takes you from the spectacular Blue Mountains of New South Wales through the historic settlement of Broken Hill to Adelaide before setting out across the treeless plains of the Nullarbor to gold-rich Kalgoorlie and onwards to Perth. 

Both the Ghan and the Indian Pacific offer two levels of service. Gold Service offers twin and single sleeper cabins (twin cabins are ensuite) which are comfortable lounges by day converting to bunks by night. Guests are welcome to use the Gold Service Lounge and all meals are included. Red Service offers comfortable ‘Daynighter’ seats with access to shared bathroom facilities at the end of each carriage. Meals and drinks are available for purchase.

Flexible fares are available if it does not suit your travel plans to do the full journey and these allow you break your journey enroute to explore. If you are travelling on the Ghan you can spend a few days in Alice Springs or the opal-mining centre of Coober Pedy. For those travelling on the Indian Pacific why not spend a few days in Adelaide, sample some of the fine wine or explore the natural delights of Kangaroo Island.
