After a scenic flight from Cairns over the Great Barrier Reef and her islands, across deserted beaches and the rich green rainforest below descend over a coastline which is as isolated as it was when discovered by Captain Cook over 200 years ago. On arrival in Cooktown transfer by 4WD to Mungumby Lodge, 35 minutes to the south for your 2 night stay.
A 4 hour 4x4 safari of Cooktown is included. As you stand on Grassy Hill travel back in time and imagine the view as James Cook stood here trying to plot a path through the treacherous reef systems. Identify where Captain Cook’s crew repaired the HMS Endeavour after hitting what is known today as Endeavour Reef, before limping to shore with a sail wrapped around the bow. Visit the James Cook Museum and the historical Cooktown cemetery as you return to Mungumby Lodge stop at Keatings Landing to see the wealth of birdlife including magpie geese and whistling ducks as well as the fearsome crocodile.
Day two takes you on a journey, which leads into some of the most wonderful dry country imaginable. Setting out early cross the Little Annan River to view the mighty Annan gorge then head inland to Quinkan country stopping frequently to view wildlife along the way. A visit to the Quinkan Cultural Centre in Laura really sums up all the facts and opens your imagination to the hardships endured and Life of the Cape York for the past 35,000 years. At Split Rock art site view 3 galleries of Aboriginal art on the rocks and learn the legends of the Quinkan. Lunch is enjoyed under the Mango trees in sleepy Laura listening to the Lorakeet's and Galas.
