Launceston, Tasmania’s second largest city, stands near the Cataract Gorge, formed by the South Esk River and crossed by the world’s longest single-span chairlift.
The city is noted for its solid Victorian and Edwardian architecture,
pristine gardens and Roman Baths but beyond the surrounding farmland
the landscape is more rugged and dramatic with dense rainforest and
crashing waterfalls at Notley Gorge and pink granite peaks and
wonderful white beaches at Freycinet National Park. The nearby Tamar
Valley is ideal walking country and Tamar Island is a haven for
waterbirds.
