Maria Island walk offers a range of wildlife viewing that is unparalleled. From rare kangaroos, wallabies, wombats and fur seals to echidnas and penguins that are totally at ease with the observing visitors. This tranquil island is awash with untouched beaches, history and stunning natural beauty.
With a Mediterranean style climate and a landscape so diverse it ranges from rugged coastline and pristine beaches, to prominent mountains and evergreen forests, Maria Island is the perfect wilderness escape. Walking with only a light daypack and a maximum group size of 8, deciding on what kind of wine to have with dinner is as stressful as it gets.
2 nights are spent in permanent beachfront camps, the final night is spent in a heritage listed house. An understanding is required to ensure a minimal impact on this delicate environment. Solar power and rainwater are used to guarantee that this eco-friendly tourism experience can continue for many future generations.
The Maria Island Walk received the award for The Best Adventure Tourism Experience at the 2011 Qantas Australian Tourism awards, having already won in 2008 and having been a finalist every year since 2005. In total, the walk has won eight national tourism awards in the last five years.
