Victoria is sports mad and it is almost a religion here.
The Melbourne Cup is a public holiday celebrated with gusto and the
Grand Prix transforms the leafy, inner suburbs into motorised frenzy of
activity to challenge the greatest drivers in the world.
Grand Prix
In the sporting capital of Australia experience the thrill of
high-speed drama as the F1 teams arrive at the Albert Park circuit for
a weekend of high-adrenaline excellence.
Albert Park is a green and leafy retreat south of the Yarra River,
between the city and St Kilda beach. Each year, at the end of the long
hot summer, the park’s peace is shattered as grandstands go up and the
city welcomes thousands of spectators, journalists and team personnel.
The result is superb: trackside facilities that are second to none,
with shops, bars and restaurants for all tastes, plus giant screens to
keep up with all the action. From the city, the free tram shuttle will
get you there in minutes, and getting around the track is easy too. As
well as F1, a full programme includes celebrity races, V8 supercars and
historic car demonstrations. And when it’s all over, you’re welcome to
walk the track.
Melbourne Cup
Dating back to 1861 the Melbourne Cup is more than just a horse race –
it is a social and cultural tradition and literally is the ‘celebration
that stops the nation!’ Now for the first time you can be part of the
carnival atmosphere that engulfs Melbourne at the beginning of November
very year.
AAMI Victoria Derby Day is a show stopping start to the week. The
showcase event of the 9 race program is the Derby, a classic test for 3
year olds. The best horses and jockey’s from overseas and Australia
compete and the day is a ‘must’ for any racing enthusiast.
The first Tuesday in November is Melbourne Cup Day, Australia’s most
famous horse race. The festive atmosphere ensures that this is more
than just a horse race but it is a race that brings everything at the
racecourse (and across the nation) to a standstill at 3pm.
Crown Oaks Day is popularly known as ‘Ladies Day’ and it is an
unwritten law amongst Melbourne Cup goers that the female attendees
save their best outfits for today. The highlight race of the day is the
Crown Oaks for 3 year old fillies but the focus is undoubtedly on the
ladies.
Emirates Stakes Day brings to an end the Melbourne Cup Carnival and is
recognised as the carnival’s ‘true’ family day with children’s
activities and entertainment for all members of the family.
