Sit back and watch Australia’s timeless landscapes fly by your window on this epic train trip. Board at Sydney and hop off for whistle-stop tours of Broken Hill, Adelaide and gold-rich Kalgoorlie.
Day 1 - 2: Sydney - Broken Hill Following a stay in Sydney, board the Indian Pacific and settle into your cabin or lounge chair for a comfortable afternoon watching the sandstone cliffs, forested valleys, escarpments and waterfalls of the Blue Mountains morph into the more arid landscapes of the New South Wales outback. See a fiery sun sink into rugged ranges, mulga bush and desert plain as you enjoy dinner and wine in the dining car. Pull into Broken Hill early the next morning and marvel at the clear light and beautiful colours that have drawn many artists to this area. This former mining town known as Silver City sits amidst distinctive desert landscapes and an oasis of lakes. Soak up the city on a one-hour whistle-stop tour. Learn about the rich mining history and visit the Royal Flying Doctor Base. See the Living Desert Sculptures and one of the impressive art galleries. Overnight: The Indian Pacific, Gold Service, including breakfast and dinner.
Day 2 - 5: Broken Hill - Adelaide As you arrive into Adelaide mid-afternoon, the first things you’ll notice are the colonial buildings surrounded by superb parklands, beaches and hills. Check out the stone buildings lining North Terrace and the Rundle Street cafe scene. Take a couple of days to explore the “Festival City”; maybe visit the lush wine growing areas of the Barossa Valley or take a trip to Kangaroo Island, Australia’s own Galapagos. 3 nights: The Hotel Richmond, on a bed and breakfast basis.
Day 5 - 6: Adelaide - Cook Re-board the Indian Pacific in Adelaide and next morning you will be in Cook, where you can wander one of the world’s most isolated outposts. Once a thriving railway settlement, Cook now only has a handful of residents and sits in the middle of the vast treeless Nullarbor Plains, around 1,500 kilometres from Perth. Overnight: The Indian Pacific, Gold Service, including breakfast and dinner.
Day 6 - 7: Cook - Kalgoorlie and Perth Arrive in Kalgoorlie, Australia’s gold capital just in time for a night tour. See the floodlit super pit goldmine, more than 400 metres deep and over three kilometres long, and hear stories of bandits, fortunes and hardships as you wander past the grand old pubs of Hannan Street. Re-board the train for the final leg of your journey and wake up in Perth. Overnight: The Indian Pacific, Gold Service, including breakfast and dinner.
Day 7 - 10: Perth Perth is a sunny, beach-loving city and is closer to Singapore than Sydney, making it an important gateway to Asia. Make the most of your first morning here with an Indian-Pacific tour along the Swan River and past the carefully restored colonial buildings. Once you’ve had a glimpse at Perth’s attractions, you will be dropped at your accommodation to begin your three-night stay. 3 nights: The Richardson Hotel, on a bed and breakfast basis.
