Exploring the Yukon & Alaska > Silver Trail with Dempster Highway
This classic route highlights the best of Canada's north - the focus is to get away from the mainstream, the whole reason for travelling to the Yukon. The Dempster Highway is the only road in Canada to cross the Arctic Circle offering a tremendous journey through a superb spectrum of landscapes.
Day 1 Arrive in Whitehorse. Spend the day at leisure exploring the Yukon's capital. Be sure to visit the S.S. Klondike, one of two surviving paddlesteamers in the Yukon. Overnight: Whitehorse
Day 2 Whitehorse to Mayo (407 km) Drive from Whitehorse to Mayo along the Klondike highway, perhaps stopping at Pelly Crossing for an ice cream. Overnight: Mayo
Day 3 Mayo to Dawson City (235 km) Drive along old back roads and mountain trails, exploring the old mining towns of Mayo and Keno City before continuing to Dawson City. Overnight: Dawson City
Day 4 Dawson City to Eagle Plains (409 km) Pass the Ogilvie Mountains enroute to Eagle Plains where each kilometre promises to be more spectacular than the previous. The landscape soon turns to typical Tundra. Overnight: Eagle Plains.
Day 5 Eagle Plains to Inuvik (365 km) Approach the Richardson Mountains and the Artic Circle. At the highest point on the mountains, cross into the NorthWest Territories. Cross the Mackenzie River which is one of the longest rivers in the world. 2 nights: Inuvik.
Day 6 Inuvik Enjoy a flightseeing trip up to the Arctic Ocean or visit the famous Igloo Church. Dine at the elegant Peppermill, one of the best restaurants in town.
Day 7 Inuvik to Eagle Plains (365 km) Travel south to Eagle Plains. Again, cross the Mackenzie and Peel rivers by state ferries (free of charge). Overnight: Eagle Plains
Day 8 Eagle Plains to Dawson City (409 km) Continue on the Dempster Highway further south to the Klondike Highway. Take the Klondike Highway west towards Dawson City. 2 nights: Dawson City
Day 9 Dawson City At the turn of the century, at the height of the Klondike gold rush, this was the largest city north of Seattle and west of Winnipeg and gold is still being extensively mined. Try your hand at panning for gold or tour the goldfields.
Day 10 Dawson City to Beaver Creek (482 km) Cross the Yukon river by ferry and join the Top of the World Highway through mountains and valleys until you reach the Yukon/Alaska border. Continue south towards Beaver Creek, back in the Yukon. Overnight: Beaver Creek.
Day 11 Beaver Creek to Haines Junction (327 km) Travel the Alaska highway along the Kluane Lake towards Haines Junction. This is the ideal base to explore Kluane National Park. Overnight: Haines Junction
Day 12 Haines Junction to Haines (366 km) Journey through magnificent scenery towards the Alaska fishing community of Haines. 2 nights: Haines
Day 13 Haines Visit one of the scenic highlights of Alaska, Glacier Bay National Park, which is best seen from the water. There are wildlife viewing, boating, kayaking and sightseeing options available.
Day 14 Haines to Skagway (by ferry) the Skagway to Whitehorse (182 km) Travel by ferry through the spectacular Lynn Canal to Skagway, then continue you journey by car to Whitehorse. Overnight: Whitehorse
Day 15 Whitehorse Return your rental car and continue with your onward arrangements.
