Nestled amongst the stunning mountain scenery of the Tonkinese Alps,
this former French Hill Station is the base from which to explore a
number of ethnic minority villages, where life is lived simply, ancient
beliefs hold strong and colourful traditional dress is still worn.
Intricately carved rice terraces tumble down steep sided mountains like
a patchwork quilt and mountain peaks shrouded in mist peep though
offering a tantalising glimpse of what lies beyond.
Mai Chau is
the heart of a beautiful valley that is a world away from the hustle
and bustle of city life. Unspoilt and untouchedMai Chau offers stunning
scenery and a warm welcome from theWhite Thai inhabitants. Lush green
forest and stilt houses characterise the region and you will not travel
far before you encounter H’mong, DaoMuong and Tay people. This is a
region where weaving is held in high regard and you will find women
working at their looms throughout the village. The colourful Sunday
market brings many people into town and gives a real insight into the
lives of the White Thai ethnic minority people.
