Getting Around In New Zealand : Rail and Ferry
 Getting around New Zealand is easy with a scenic rail network and the regular ferry service between the North and South Islands.
 Departing daily the Tranz Alpine travels between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand to the other. See the fields of the Canterbury Plains and farmland, followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River. The train then climbs into the Southern Alps before descending through lush beech rain forest to the West Coast, gateway to the glaciers.
The route takes just 4½ hours and traverses 16 tunnels, and 5 viaducts, the highest being the Staircase standing at 73 metres. Christchurch to Greymouth and vice versa from £75 per person.  The Tranz Coastal departs daily and links the port of Picton with Christchurch. This journey is a scenic feast of New Zealand, with the Kaikoura mountain ranges on one side and the rugged Pacific Ocean coastline on the other. Pass though the village of Kaikoura, where, you can break your journey to take in the whale watching or swim with the dolphins. Picton to Christchurch and vice versa from £55 per person.  The Overlander is a journey through the heart of the North Island, travelling between Auckland and Wellington. See the fantastic views of New Zealand farmland the volcanic plateau, Mount Ruapehu, the world famous Raurimu Spiral and stunning river gorges. The Overlander departs Auckland and Wellington daily during peak season and operates a reduced schedule in the winter months. Auckland to Wellington and vice versa from £60 per person.  The Interislander ferry provides a year round link betweenWellington on the North Island and Picton on the South Island. Sailing on Kaitaki, Arahura or the Aratere, cruise the beautiful Marlborough Sounds before arriving at your destination. From £31 per person.
