At the northern most tip of the South Island, Farewell Spit has been a sanctuary since the 1930s and provides a home for over 90 species of bird, most importantly the waders. Bar tailed godwits, knots, curlews, whimbrels and turnstones fly 12,000km every autumn, to spend the summer in the south.
Through your guide hear the history of Puponga and New Zealand's first Radar Station. See where whales strand and uncover the mystery of the migrant waders. At the Farewell Spit Lighthouse there is time to explore the historic buildings and enjoy the refreshments provided in the century old lighthouse keeper's residence. Along the beach you’ll have stunning views of the Tasman coastline and the opportunity to climb the sand dune at Mullet Channel for panoramic views.
