Southland, New Zealand’s southernmost region, is a far cry from the dryness found further north.
Here there are rainforest, lush pastures and quiet backwaters where the much sought-after brown trout abound. At Curio Bay there is also one of the wonders of the world – a petrified forest thought to be 190 million years old. Invercargill, admired for its gardens and parks, is New Zealand’s most southern city and just a half hour drive from Bluff and its famous oysters. From here you can catch a ferry over to Stewart Island where you can see an amazing number of native birds including the kiwi in its natural habitat.
