On the foothills of the snowy Andes lies the city of Mendoza, the home to the Argentine Malbec grape.The Argentine wine region features never-ending vineyards stretching along the Andean range and the province of Mendoza now boasts more than 550 wineries, from small boutiques to large-scale exporters. The city prides itself not only on the cleanliness of its streets, well-kept parks and elegant tree-lined avenues but also on its historic heritage, the excellence of its wines and the beauty of the surrounding Andean landscape. Set at the foot of the Andes in the Cuyo region, the town lies in a beautiful and fertile oasis formed by the Mendoza and Tunuyán rivers, which also offer exciting white-water rafting experiences for the more adventurous.

Best times to go:
The summer months of November to April are a great time to visit Mendoza when the warmer weather permits outdoor activities such as hiking and climbing. The fall months of April and May are also appealing as the trees are turning colour. During the winter months, why not head to Las Leñas and take advantage of the powder. Worthy of a visit is the wine harvest festival, la Fiesta de la Vendimia, the most important event on the Mendozan calendar, which takes place in March and lasts a week.

The climate in Mendoza is moderate-temperate, though its mountains provide a certain degree of aridity. Summer month temperatures from November to February range between 18-33ºC; days are very hot and nights are fresh. In the winter months from June to August, minimum temperatures drop to 3ºC whereas maximums can reach 16ºC. Rainfall is at it’s lowest during the months of June and July and highest during the summer months of January to March.
