Once the country’s capital, Salvador proudly
hosts the largest collection of colonial architecture in Latin America and is
the oldest and most historic city in Brazil. The Historical Centre has
buildings from the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and is the
main centre for tourist attractions with many restaurants, craft studios and
Baroque architecture. It is divided into three main areas: the area from the
Municipal Square to the São Francisco Plaza; the Pelourinho and the Carmo
Plaza, and it ends at the Santo Antonio Além Carmo Plaza. Salvador’s cultural
life is one of the busiest in the country with its festive carnival being one
of its main attractions.
