The famous Nazca lines, which can only be fully appreciated from the air, were edged in the desert sands around 600 A.D. and their origin is still an enigma today.The Paracas National Reserve including the Ballestas Islands is a rich coastal eco-system, home to the most magnificent marine wildlife. A short ride away lie the cities of Ica, Peru’s wine centre and Pisco, home to Peru’s national drink.

Best times to go:
March brings the Fiesta de la Vendimia, the festival of the great harvest and good wine. Enjoy parades, floats, wine festivals, gait horse competitions and handicrafts. Early September hosts Nazca Tourist Week during which handicrafts, farm and livestock fairs take place.

During the summer months, from December to March the air is hot and humid and the sky is blue. During the winter months of May to November, however the mornings can be very chilly and the air tends to form a drizzle called garúa.
