Puno and Lake Titicaca
The Best of Peru
Nestled in a vast highland plain in the Puno region between Peru and Bolivia, Titicaca is the world’s highest navigable lake, at 3,820 meters (12,500 feet). It covers an area of over 8,300 square kilometers (3,205 square miles). The lake is also home to the floating islands made of reeds that are populated by the Uros, descendants of a nearly-extinct culture which used Totora as material in the construction of houses and rafts.

Day 1 – Cusco & Puno (B/L)

Early departure by bus to the City of Puno. During the trip, you will pass by the lovely Wacarpay Lake, offering spectacular views of the mountains reflected in its calm waters.  Proceed to the beautiful Town of Andahuaylillas, and visit the Church of San Pedro de Andahuaylillas, better known as the Sistine Chapel of the Americas, due to its decorated polychrome ceiling. About 70 km further on, pass through La Raya Ranch where you can see herds of vicuñas and llamas. Then travel along the High Plateau of Collao, stopping at the Town of Ayaviri, an important livestock and textile Centre, to visit the impressive Temple of Kalasaya, ruins from the ancient Pucara Culture. Lunch in a countryside restaurant, where you can enjoy the delightful culinary art of the region. Afternoon arrival into Puno and transfer to your selected hotel.

Day 2 – Puno (B/L)
Puno sits on the banks of Lake Titicaca. This region is the birthplace of Inca mythology. According to the legend, Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo emerged from the sacred Lake Titicaca to found the Inca Empire and gave birth to the Inca civilization. During colonial times, the Spaniards settled in Puno attracted by its mineral richness. Visit the floating islands of the Uros and Taquile; lake tribes that live today much as their forbears did thousands of years ago. Enjoy lunch with the local natives in the islands. Overnight.

Day 3 - Puno (B)
Early morning transfer to Juliaca Airport to board your flight to your next destination. On the way to the airport, visit the famous Chullpas of Sillustani: stone cylinder burial chambers used by the Aymaras to bury their important leaders. Lake Umayo, located in front of the Chullpas, adds further beauty to the place. You will also have the opportunity to observe several local typical birds.
