Over a thousand years ago seafarers from a distant culture landed on the shores of a volcanic island and what developed was one of the most unique and remarkable cultures in all of Polynesia.
Platforms of large statues, carved from volcanic rock, were erected along the coastline. These monuments, known as ‘Moai’, are some of the most mysterious and incredible ancient relics ever discovered and to this day the mystery remains as to why they were carved.

Best times to go:
October to November and March to April are the best months to visit – solidly in between the high season rush and the eerie, off-season emptiness, the archaeological sites are still crowd-free and the rates are still reasonable. Best of all, the weather, typically in the 70s, is ideal for both hiking and beach-going.
