Where in Samoa?
Upolu
Island: Physically the island resembles Tahiti with verdant mountains
and a circling lagoon, Upolu is however wilder and less impacted by
traditional tourism. Apia is the capital and retains a picturesque
charm.
Savaii: Although
one of the largest islands in the South Pacific, Savaii is one of the
least populated and therefore offers an untouched, pristine island
experience. The beautiful tropical rainforests that cover the centre of
the island are a haven for tropical bird life and perfect if you should
tire of beach life.
What you need to know
Air
New Zealand flies weekly from Los Angeles to Apia and four times a week
from Auckland. Flying time from Los Angeles is around 11 hours and just
4 hours from Auckland.
Language: Samoan, English is also widely spoken.
Currency: Samoan Tala - Although it is often possible to pay in US dollars.
Time: GMT –11 hours
When to go
May
to October is the dryer, cooler season where temperatures should
average 25c. December to March sees more humid conditions with higher
rainfall. As Samoa is located in the tropics you should however be
prepared to expect a shower at any time.
Our opinion
• Apia is the capital city, it has a slightly rundown air yet retains a picturesque and historical charm.
• Do not tip, it is not expected and do not ‘haggle’, the price you see is the price you pay.
• Ensure you take time to enjoy a drink and take in the atmosphere in the bar at Aggie Greys.
