This self-drive introduces you to New England’s fascinating history and maritime culture. See the spot where the “Pilgrim Fathers” landed and established their first colony in Plymouth. Enjoy the laidback beach lifestyle of stylish Martha’s Vineyard in Cape Cod, visit elegant Newport in Rhode Island and stay in the quaint village of Mystic.

Day 1   Boston - Plymouth
40 miles. On arrival into Boston Airport, collect your hire car and drive south to beautiful Plymouth, one of the oldest towns in America, founded in 1620.
Overnight: Plymouth

Day 2   Plymouth - Martha’s Vineyard
40 miles (land only). Visit Plymouth’s waterfront to see the Mayflower II, a full-size replica of the ship that carried the early settlers to the New World, and Plymouth Rock, upon which the pilgrims first stepped. Later, drive to Woods Hole, park your car and take a short ferry journey to Martha’s Vineyard for a three-night stay. Your charming hotel is located in the popular seaside village of Vineyard Haven.
2 nights: Martha’s Vineyard

Days 3-4   Martha’s Vineyard
Discover a variety of landscapes and histories today from the busy, fashionable eastern half of the island where Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, and Vineyard Haven lure the rich and famous to the sparsely populated and sleepy towns in the west. Relax on the beach or enjoy activities from horseback riding at sunset to golf and tennis. Alternatively, take the ferry to neighbouring Nantucket Island and stroll its cobblestone streets lined with quaint boutiques.

Day 5   Martha’s Vineyard   Newport - Mystic
120 miles (land only). Return by ferry to the mainland and drive to Newport, filled with the opulence of an earlier period. Journey along Ocean Drive and “Millionaire’s Row” to view the summer cottages of the Gilded Age. Newport’s charming Brick Marketplace and waterfront area are filled with shops and restaurants. Continue to the quaint fishing town of Mystic.
2 nights: Mystic

Day 6   Mystic
Visit Mystic Seaport, a leading maritime museum. Climb aboard historic tall ships, stroll through a re-created 19th century coastal village or watch a working shipyard.

Day 7   Mystic - Boston
100 miles. Visit the Freedom Trail to see important sites from colonial and revolutionary periods, before heading back to Boston Airport to return your car.
