New Zealand is perfect for exploring by car. There is a large network of branches across the country, including many of the airports and the Interislander ferry terminals in Wellington and Picton.

Roads are well maintained and uncrowded although can be winding and narrow, so time should be allowed for journeys which look only a short distance on the map. The majority of main roads are sealed, however you will find that many backcountry roads are gravel.

Driving in New Zealand

Fuel
Fuel is sold by the litre and petrol stations are plentiful although trading hours, particularly in rural areas can vary. All Budget cars run on unleaded petrol while some of the 4WD vehicles are diesel.

Rental Age
The minimum age for hiring a rental vehicle is 21, there is no maximum restriction.

Unlimited Kilometres
Tailor Made Travel clients receive unlimited kilometres.

One Way Rentals
Providing your rental is for a minimum of 3 continuous days there will be NO one way rental fee charged.

Insurance
Tailor Made Travel clients are covered by motor insurance providing third party cover. You are able to purchase the following protection package: $25 plus GST reduces the excess to $225 plus GST.

Complimentary Hotel Delivery
If your hotel is within a 10km radius of any Budget location your vehicle can be delivered free of charge between the hours of 08.30am-4.00pm Monday to Friday. (Conditions may apply).

Driving Licence
A full UK driving licence is required.

Roadside Assistance
Budget offers 24-hour roadside assistance throughout the country.

Bond/Deposit
A security bond/deposit of $150 is required at the start of the rental.

Fleet
The fleet offered by Budget is constantly updated with an average age of 12 months featuring the latest products from Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi and Holden.

Inter Island Hire
If travelling on the Interislander between North and South Island your vehicle is dropped at the relevant terminal and your onward vehicle collected at the other side. N.B. Strict drink driving laws apply and random breath testing is carried out.
